Temple Architecture-Different Styles - II Blog by Swamini Atmaprajnananda Saraswati

Pranams to your divinity, Swaminiji

for this great great great contribution to speaking tree, on temples and heritages !

i feel for a moment that i am there and experiencing all the thrills of the theertha yathra, in this ''e-tour''

at once one overflows in emotions at the sight of such grandeur,
so much devotion, extreme commitment, creative imagination
that has been expressed in the temple architecture,
as if the builders have had a direct peep into the devaloka,
and absorbed the beauty truth and bliss
and came down to earth to share with all the world for ever

particularly one becomes utterly humble in the way ..kannada saint basava ...felt ...
enjoying the presence of divinity, in present moment, here and now,

uLLavaru shiválaya máduvaru nánénu mádali badavanayyá
enna kále kambha dehavé degula shiravé honna kaLashavayyá
Kúdala Sangama Devá keLayya sthavarakkaLivunTu jangamakaLivilla

The rich will make temples for Shiva.
What shall I, a poor man, do?
My legs are pillars,
The body the shrine,
The head a cupola of gold.
Listen, O lord Kudal Sangama deva,
Things standing shall fall,
But the moving ever shall stay

just a coincidence, i have similar views, and similar queries on the temple architecture, and the principles that go into the conceiving and designing a temple, /a holy structure

Swaminiji has given excellent answer thru sharing a valuable basaveshvara vachana , kindly see it .

your response is helping me to share some clues from my own insights as follows

basically , a temple design is conceived by self realized souls, trying to express their findings on the divinity within themselves , and s o a temple essentially a visible model of the human being, his body, the 5 sheeths, inner most being the garbhagudi, the abode of the self ,
it is an excercise in artistic presentation of that idea , we can draw detailed lessons from the shape and construction
one point to be noted that all have a significance, best known by the designer
not only this, several enigmas exist on the significance of every detail like why bells, lamps, harathi, abhisheka, puja, pradakshina , , also prana prathishta, shatagopa, and the manthrocharan etc ...that is relevant but outside the scope of this blog, presenting the magnificence of the temple heritage preserved thru architecture enduring till now
masters will be able to give detailed answers
thank you, i agree that appreciation and valuing only the shape size beauty of the temples is not the whole story, at least it leads a few like you to do a bit more enquiry and get at the real thing
