  • " Baalaanaam rodhanam bhalam " Crying is children's strength...

You would have heard this popular saying. Crying is the way that babies signal they need something.

In the olden days, in big families, children had to cry to draw the attention of elders to get their feed. Now they cry less as the feed comes before they ask for and in fact it is their parents who cry if the kids delay in drinking milk, as they are in a hurry to push them to take-care or pre-school before rushing to their work place!.

Anyway, here is the complete verse:

    Paksheenaam Balam Aakaasam,
    Matsyaanam Udakam Balam,
    Durbalasya Balam Raaja,
    Baalaanaam Rodanam Balam.

Sky is the strength for birds, udakam (water) is the strength of fish, king is the strength of the weak and crying is the strength of kids.
The author didn't have in mind ducks, penguins or other sea birds and it was a general statement on the importance of the sky for the birds.

Similarly being used to the exploitation of the weak by the present rulers, we should not shout at the poet for his statement that the king was the support for the weak . Those days, the weak could depend on their king (ruler) for support. The king was respected as he worked for the well being of his subjects. Good kings were treated as the head of each household that Kalidas went to the extent of taking advantage of his poetic liberty to say that the real father of the subjects was the king and the biological fathers were only instruments for their birth.

    'Prajaanam vinayaadaanam rakshanam baranaathapi,
sa pitha, pithara thraasa kevalam jenmahethava'

It was the king by virtue of governing the subjects and receiving their respect, their real father and the other fathers were 'Kevalam janma haethava'.

The Mahakavi was glorifying Dilipa, the first king in the Raghu Dynasty.

If someone says so about our present rulers, imagine the sorry plight he will land in !

If the weak explodes and one day they will, the earth will tremble and the ruler will tumble. It is going to happen soon in our country.
