Promise

A promise normally assumes certain constancy of a situation . 

but
situations change from moment to moment, 
and keeping a promise proves costly 
or even fatal 
or foolish

so wisdom is to assess the implications of changes , 
and to revise one's promise , 
including negating totally if required
